Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants
As part of our continued effort to advance our “Medicines for Life” initiatives, we are currently looking for an Ex Vivo Lung Specialist (EVLS) Trainee for our Silver Spring, Maryland, campus. In this role, you will train with our local EVLS team at our Lung Bioengineering facility in Silver Spring, Maryland, as well as attend a four-month certification training and assessment to become an Ex Vivo Lung Specialist (EVLS) with our partners at Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Canada. As an EVLS Trainee, you will develop the skills necessary to perform the clinical ex vivo Lung procedure protocols.
Maintain all regulatory compliance frameworks associated with clinical procedures including, but not limited to, that of the FDA, UNOS, OPTN, CLIA, and CMS at the US federal and state level, as well as that of Health Canada
Triage and accept/reject initial donor lung referral from transplant center
Perform physiologic and/or anatomical assessment of donor lung offer and review accompanying documentation to determine if donor lung has potential for extended preservation and assessment
Prepare surgical suite including equipment (hardware and disposable) setup, and regular ongoing, and as needed, ex vivo support activities involving, but not limited to instrument and equipment preparation, maintenance and quality control
Support regular daytime office hours, as well as daily on-call availability after hours and on weekends for the purpose of organ evaluation, surgical lung cannulation, flushing, circuit connection and start-up, x-ray, bronchoscopy, and blood gas analysis of ex vivo lungs
Follow procedures and be competent in sterile technique and basic surgical skills
Participate in the clinical review meetings and other administrative and scientific activities
Undergo intensive medically supervised education and skills training in order to provide organ care that is distinctive and unique from care provided by other hospital personnel
Attend staff meetings and provide input as needed into operational, clinical and regulatory development plans
Collaborate and perform experiments as needed with pre-clinical and translational medicinal colleagues in assessing the potential of new lung therapeutic development
Other assigned deliverables as necessary
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Upon hire, willingness to train onsite for two to three months at United Therapeutics ex vivo facility in Silver Spring, Maryland, as well as four months at Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Canada
Upon initial training completion, successfully passing Toronto General Hospital any required certification requirements for clinical, oral, and written portions
Master’s degree in sciences or registered nurse, physician’s assistant studies or other licensed healthcare practitioner education, all with significant practical clinical experience, or hold M.D., D.O., Ph.D.
Minimum two years advanced practice organ procurement/preservation/transplant experience with direct experience participating in surgical procedures
Experience in sterile technique
Critical care experience including ventilator management and blood gas interpretation
Experience with data collection and analysis
Demonstrated interest in continuing education, with specialized knowledge of physiology and mechanics
Ability to operate Apple and PC; Microsoft Office Suite (2007 and 2010) skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint required, as well as Adobe Acrobat, etc.

Additional Salary Information: All employees are eligible to participate in United Therapeutics Corporation's annual incentive program which consists of a targeted bonus of 20%. The target bonus is comprised of both a cash award and a Restricted Stock Units (RSU).
