The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a subset of the Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute. Cleveland Clinic’s Ob/Gyn & Women’s Health Institute is committed to providing world-class care for women of all ages. In 2017-18, the institute’s gynecology program was again ranked No.5 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and is the top-ranked program in Ohio.
The institute’s staff participates in resident, fellow, and medical student education at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. A unique residency training program offers tracking into subspecialty areas. Fellowships are offered in gynecologic oncology, urogynecology/reconstructive pelvic surgery, reproductive endocrinology, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and specialized women’s health.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 90 employed physicians and 42 advanced practice providers which includes a large midwifery program. In 2018 the Department had 270,000 patient visits, more than 10,000 deliveries and over 3,500 surgeries distributed over 30 sites, 3 main tertiary care hospitals with Level 3 NICUs and 4 secondary hospitals.
The Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology will be a physician leader with impressive credentials who reports to the Women’s Health Institute Chair and can implement and drive the strategic mission of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. The ideal candidate will be a servant leader with a record of excellence in clinical care, education, and scholarship as well as significant experience in leadership, administration, and program development. Duties and responsibilities of the Chair include oversight of general operations, quality and safety, and the recruitment, retention and mentoring of medical staff, administrators, educators and researchers.
LEADERSHIP • Assuring regular communication with all staff within the department. • Providing departmental leadership in its broadest sense. • Developing a strategic plan for the department that supports the strategic direction of the institute and Cleveland Clinic’s mission, and improving organizational performance. • Creating an environment that supports the sharing of information and ideas within the department. • Facilitating effective communication into and out of the department to all levels of the organization. • Clearly defining the department’s scope and direction in the areas of patient care, education and research. • Creating a vision and providing leadership and support to members of the department in their pursuit of excellence in the areas of patient care, education and research.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT • Assuring that each staff member in the department has a personal plan that is compatible with and supportive of Cleveland Clinic’s mission. • Chairing regular group meetings of all department staff members. • Overseeing and resolving issues, including those involving resource utilization, productivity, access to the department, professional staff, patient satisfaction and other administrative functions, as required. • Monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of patient care provided within the department. • Ensuring the highest quality of professional practice in the department.
FISCAL MANAGEMENT • Preparing a departmental budget for presentation to the institute chair • Aspects of fiscal management include: – Projecting income and direct cost for the entire department – Prioritizing equipment requests – Prioritizing space and remodeling requests in collaboration with the institute chair. – Being responsible for assuring that the expenditure of all departmental funds for which he or she is responsible is in accordance with current Cleveland Clinic policy. – Monitoring the performance of the department throughout the year, and analyzing budget variances – Interacting with the institute chair on a regular basis concerning financial matters. – Adhering to the organization’s Corporate Compliance Program.
• Professional Staff Recruitment – Prospectively reviewing and approving plans and expenses involved in the recruitment of proposed members to the professional staff. – Participating in negotiation of compensation requirements for new staff members.
• Performance Management – Coordinating and monitoring the administrative procedures regarding the annual professional review. – Providing appropriate information to support the annual professional review process.
• Compensation – Working with institute chairs to determine the compensation requirements of each staff member. – Recommending compensation requirements to the institute chair and the Chief of Staff and assuring that these requirements are within budget guidelines. – Helping to arbitrate disputes regarding compensation.
