JOB TITLE: Manager, Professional Coding LOCATION: Buckhorn Office Building DEPARTMENT: Coding Administration WORK SCHEDULE: Days WORK TYPE: Full Time (1.0 FTE) JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling the activities and personnel for professional coding service initiatives within Revenue Management for the Geisinger Health System.
Directly manages and implements programs to ensure efficient operations of the professional coding program in order to generate sufficient revenue and cash flow to support GHS operations and strategic initiatives.
Responsibilities include managing, formulating new programs, identifying areas of opportunity for program improvement, analyzing current workflow, benchmarking against industry best practice models, reducing duplication of effort while increasing efficiency and resolving any hospital and professional coding related issues to include coordinating policy and guidance associated with hospital and professional accounts receivable.
Assists with the establishment of training programs and various educational forums for revenue management coders and GHS associates. This also includes the communication of ongoing enhancements relative to process improvement and employee development. Assigns work schedules, interviews and recommends applicants for hire, trains and evaluates job performance and counsels as needed. Coordinates coding of professional services within established departmental timeframes. Manages a team of between 15-25 highly skilled employees with regards to correct coding.
Reports to the Director, Revenue Management Coding Operations and Revenue Management Senior Leadership. COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Demonstrates strong administrative and leadership skills, including competence in planning and organizing services and directing staff.

Demonstrated excellent prioritization and organizational skills.
Demonstrates extensive knowledge of revenue cycle and/or regulatory requirements as they relate to the hospital and professional coding operation components of the revenue cycle and the effect on overall financial health required.
Must have an understanding of an integrated delivery healthcare system.
Accurate assignment of CPT 4, HCPC Level II, Modifier, ICD – 9 – CM codes.
Thorough understanding and application of new and expanding coding guidelines for ICD-10-CM.
Superior knowledge of anatomy and physiology along with disease pathophysiology.
Advanced skills in extracting an analyzing clinical documentation. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree required. CPC/CCS/RHIT or equivalent required. Minimum of five years of Coding experience and seven years of management experience in an industry that requires oversight of workflow and productivity required.
Demonstrates extensive knowledge (i.e. minimum of five years) of revenue cycle and/or regulatory requirements as they relate to the hospital coding operation components of the revenue cycle and the effect on overall financial health. Understanding of an integrated delivery healthcare system required. Experience in a multi-hospital system preferred.
In lieu of degree, may consider CPC plus 10 years of Coding Supervisor experience.
Experience within a centralized business office utilizing one or more of the following systems 3M, IDX, Siemens, Epic, for a large-scale multi-site or multi-entity hospital system and/or a physician practice plan preferred.
Experience preferred within a revenue cycle of similar setting of size or volume. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is typically performed in an office environment.
