Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), a national leader in research, education, and clinical care, seeks a visionary physician leader and scholar to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a transformational leader to guide a nationally acclaimed department and its exceptional faculty, trainees, and staff into a new era of innovation and impact.
The IU School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the U.S. and is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The school offers high-quality medical education, leading medical research supported by a record-breaking $548 million in total external funding, and a wide range of clinical training on its nine campuses across the state. According to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the IU School of Medicine ranks No. 15 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among all public medical schools in the country, with total NIH awards exceeding $233 million.
The Department of Emergency Medicine at IUSM is a premier destination for academic emergency medicine, consistently recognized for its high-acuity clinical training, teaching, faculty development and robust research portfolio. The department’s faculty provide expert care across the IU Health system, including Methodist Hospital, a busy Level I Trauma Center, and Riley Hospital for Children, as well as at Eskenazi Health, a nationally recognized safety-net health system known for its leadership in community health and health equity. In addition, the department staffs four busy community hospitals at IU Health West, North, Fishers, and Tipton. This synergistic partnership with IU Health—one of the largest and most comprehensive healthcare systems in the U.S.—provides an unparalleled platform for world-class clinical care and population health initiatives further strengthened by the opening of a new, state-of-the-art hospital in 2027.
The Department of Emergency Medicine offers an exceptional platform for a visionary academic leader. The department is a recognized leader in toxicology, emergency medical services (EMS), wellness, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), medical education, and high-acuity emergency care. Its clinical and educational footprint is anchored by three Level I trauma centers, IU Health Methodist’s Comprehensive Stroke Center, and verified adult and pediatric burn-center expertise through Eskenazi Health and Riley Children’s Health. The department includes six academic divisions and nine fellowship programs, supporting nationally relevant training and scholarship across emergency ultrasound, EMS, simulation, toxicology, pediatric emergency medicine, clinical operations, disaster medicine, motorsports medicine, and research. Home to one of the country’s most well-established emergency medicine residency programs, founded in 1976, the department prepares the next generation of emergency medicine and subspecialty leaders. Its research enterprise focuses on high-impact areas such as neurological emergencies, health equity, and data science, benefiting from IUSM’s expansive clinical data warehouse.
This position is ideal for an accomplished leader who is visionary in developing interdisciplinary research programs and clinical models that improve acute care outcomes. The ideal candidate will be an enterprise thought-leader, adept at fostering scientific collaboration, driving clinical excellence within a complex health system, and mentoring faculty and learners to achieve their full potential. A doctorate or terminal degree is required. Minimum qualifications include an MD, MD/PhD or equivalent, and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure. The individual selected for this position will have a strong track record of extramurally funded research and be a principled leader with a record of clinical excellence, teaching, administrative accomplishment, exceptional communication, and interpersonal skills.
